ARLES-SUR-TECH – Vallespir – Pyrenées Orientales – France
Une installation de sculpture de cordes par l’artiste japonaise

The quaint village of Arles‑sur‑Tech in the southern tip of France is nestled in the valleys of the Pyrenées Orientales along the border with Spain. A former principality of Catalonia the ancient tongue of Catalan is still widely spoken there today. Since antiquity, Arles‑sur‑Tech has been known for its august abbeys and as a center for iron mining. Today weaving, chocolate and biscuit factories dot the village's landscape.
With its rich history and sublime climate, Arles‑sur‑Tech is an ideal environment for artists from around the world to gather and explore their creative visions. An artist‑in‑residence program was recently initiated by Mayor M. René Bantoure in collaboration with newly arrived residents of the area, artists

Teresa Wennberg and Pierre Lobstein. Invited to participate in this year's program were Japanese environmental sculptor Mariyo Yagi, photographer and Berlin‑based architect, Yuna Yagi, and New York 'new technology' artist, Adrianne Wortzel. When first invited, Mariyo Yagi had yet to determine what her artistic contribution would be. Soon she was inspired to carry forward with her NAWA Project, and to involve the local people

ART PROJECT STANDPOINT;
Mariyo Yagi’s Nawa Project in Arles-sur-Tech Upon arriving in Arles-sur-Tech, Mariyo immersed herself in the
local culture, people, and history. She soon found inspiration in the relics of the town's past--the abbey and the ancient iron mine ruins; in its contemporary vibrancy --the traditional weaving, festivals and food markets; and in the lush natural surround the valleys and hillsides of the Pyrenées Mountains. Her creative
vision began to crystallize.

Concept: To revitalize the traditional textile industry in
Arles-sur-Tech, Catalan. The "NAWA" social art project would
unite the participating artisans with other community members,
young and old, to catalyze a new fusion of cultures in Catalan.
(N A W A means 'YOU & I' and 'ROPE' in Japanese)

“NAWA”
Rope = NAWA = you and I
NAWA means both rope in Japanese and 'You and I'
NAWA is a symbol of the vital link between the
cosmos and all living things on earth and has the
same double spiral form as DNA strands.
You and I twined together on this earth through
NAWA, the Vital Link as art, to create a form that
connects all living things.
